Tracing Fine-Sediment Using Artificial Radionuclides
نویسنده
چکیده
The environmental characteristics of many artificial gamma-emitting radionuclides provide a number of distinct advantages over other forms of fine-sediment tracer that are readily exploitable when undertaking erosion investigations. This makes them particularly effective for accurately measuring the movement of small quantities of fine-sediment, especially in low-energy environments where soil movement is commensurately slow, or for measuring erosion rates over short (i.e. event-based) timescales. The major advantages and disadvantages associated with their use as tracers are outlined and briefly discussed. Three examples of tracing applications using caesium-134 (Cs) and cobalt-60 (Co) are summarised in order to highlight their versatility and demonstrate the diverse ways in which they can be used in fieldand laboratory-based investigations.

Up-scaling the Application of Fallout Radionuclides to Support Catchment Sediment Management Programmes
The application of fallout radionuclides in soil erosion and sedimentation investigations has provided a valuable tool for improving the understanding of erosion and sediment transfer processes. However, most studies using fallout radionuclides have focussed on small areas. Increasing acceptance of the important role of fine sediment in degrading aquatic habitats and in the transfer and fat...
متن کاملRadiological Hazard Assessment of Radionuclides in Sediment and Water Samples of International Meighan Wetland in Arak, Iran
Introduction: There are natural and artificial radioactive nuclei in our environment, as well as in the structure of the living organism. Currently, industrial and municipal pollution has also an impact on increasing the level of radiation. The present study investigated the effect of inlet water from Arak Wastewater Treatment Plant on international Meighan Wetland and...
متن کاملA Study of Sediments and Radioactive Particles of the Yenisei River Using a Variety of Analytical Methods
The Yenisei River, one of the largest rivers in the world, is contaminated with artificial radionuclides released by a Russian nuclear facility producing weapon-grade plutonium, which has been in operation for many years. Examination of Yenisei River sediment samples revealed the presence of artificial radionuclides typical of radioactive discharge from the Mining-and-ChemicalCombine (MCC) nucl...
متن کاملMercury and Radionuclides in Sediments of the Ka{tela Bay (Croatia) – Evaluation of the Sediment Pollution History*
Mercury and radionuclides (natural U and its decay series products and artificial 137Cs) were measured in sediments of the Ka{tela Bay (eastern Adriatic coast) in the vicinity of a former chloralkali plant. The depth distributions of radionuclides and mercury revealed that sediments in front of the factory represent a mixture of natural sediment and coal ash originating from the coal used in th...
متن کاملTracing suspended sediment sources in catchments and river systems.
Recent years have seen a growing awareness of the wider environmental significance of the suspended sediment loads transported by rivers and streams. This includes the importance of fine sediment in the transport of nutrients and contaminants, including phosphorus (P). Sediment source exerts a key control on the physical and geochemical properties of suspended sediment, including its P content,...
